Aretha Franklin Dead @ 76

aretha franklin dead

After news broke that Aretha Franklin was gravely ill, the Queen of Soul has passed away at the age of 76.

One of the greatest voices, who gave us songs such as “Respect,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” died today after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

She passed away in her Detroit home where she was still under hospice care, surrounded by her friends and family.

Her family has since released a statement:

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family.”

RIP

  1. Thank you Queen for your contributions to our lives. NO ONE SANG BETTER. Condolences to the family.

  2. All of the legends are leaving.. I still can’t get over Michael Jackson and prince. R.I.P

  3. Time has come and gone for those of us who were raised on Aretha via the record player in the corner of the room or the AM/FM radio blasting in the car. Like James Brown, sometimes it just wasn’t a party unless Retha was playing and there was no one better to cry with over a broken heart.
If there’s a heaven, her presence completes the choir!

  4. My top five greatest female singers ever:

    1. Whitney Houston

    2. Aretha Franklin

    3. Ella Fitzgerald

    4. Mahalia Jackson

    5. Billie Holiday

  5. Nod to anon 08:12 I was just thinking that God is building quite a choir in heaven, may he rest her soul…

Like I said in the previous article, many of my fondest memories have her music blasting in the background.

Listening to “Think, think about it” while sitting on top of the table next to a bottle of Cutty Sark Scotch amongst opened grocery bags and eating the first batch of freshly fried cat fish with the smell of a pot of mustard/turnup/and spinach and ham hocks bubbling on the stove top with a pan of buttermilk and pan dripping infused corn bread baking in the stove hinting at the fest to come (hey thats how my Modea cooked them)… Hearing “Treat me like a natural women…” while laying in the back window of my dad’s seafoam green 1969 Catilina…Watching my mother dance and pop her cooch (yeah, it was a nasty dance that I had studied to a fine art in secret and dont let me have to explain how to do the dog…) to “Chain chain chain…”

Walking past the neighborhood bbq joint Speed Queen with it’s 365 day a year smokiness filling the air, imbedded in my clothes and hair with an aroma so distinct that people knew either I had been by it or lived in close proximity to it lol, while they are playing “R.E.S.P.E.C…” in the parking lot. Hearing someone sing “Still water runs deep” at church and having my first experience of what I thought was the Holy Ghost cuz tears ran down my face and goosebumps covered my body and all I wanted to do was jump up and shout Halalueya!!! But I was so scared of what people might think I didnt move but Modea was looking right at like she knew what I was feeling and grabbed my hand and held it while singing the song too…

    Damn…she gone???

  6. Man. Aretha’s gone ya’ll. There will never be another. She was a classic woman, with a classic sound. These lil young asses will never experience that type of soul. RIP.

    • There will be no heaven until after the second coming, which is when we will be transformed into our spiritual bodies.

It will be here on earth and those who believe will be here living in peace & harmony…so if you don’t know you better do some research and figure it out or be left out.

      • Just to add those who have already passed are in there spiritual bodies, are with the creator, and are where they are supposed to be according to how they lived on earth, but as of now (meaning because the second coming has not happened) there is technically no heaven or hell.

  7. Thank you Mz Franklin for always keeping it classy and graceful on and off the spotlight

  8. White people are trying to claim she had no will.

That’s the new thing. When artists have a valuable catalog, it’s not enough to murk them anymore. Now, whites want to make the will disappear.

Because rich people don’t have wills, right? GTFOH

    • They don’t want nary a nig… to have claim to shit.

It is okay because their time of stealing from us and robbing us blind is about to be up and everything that has been done will be undone!!!
