After building an empire humiliating celebrities at their lowest, Perez Hilton is hospitalized while some of the people who remember exactly how he made his name are finally speaking up.

There is an old saying about the internet:

It never forgets.

Perez Hilton may be learning that lesson the hardest way possible.

The self-proclaimed celebrity gossip Queen, born Mario Lavandeira Jr., remains hospitalized after an August 4 mental-health crisis that unfolded publicly during a disturbing TikTok livestream from his Miami home.

And as more details emerge about what happened that night, another story has been developing right beside it.

The receipts are coming home.

A Miami-Dade sheriff’s report made public Friday says emergency personnel treated Perez for both injuries and an overdose before he was hospitalized. His family says he required surgery and faces a lengthy physical and psychiatric recovery. His mother has since sought temporary custody of his three children while Perez receives treatment.

HSK is not going to turn the mechanics of a suicide attempt into entertainment.

Perez already spent enough years teaching the internet how to do that.

What matters now is everything that came before it.

Celebrity addiction?

Content.

Divorces?

Content.

Weight gain?

Content.

Closeted celebrities?

Content.

Children of famous people caught inside their parents’ scandals?

Apparently content too.

The cruelty wasn’t some accidental side effect of the business.

For years, the cruelty was the business.

And now, after Perez’s own private collapse became public spectacle, some of the people who remember that era aren’t interested in helping rewrite the history.

IRELAND BALDWIN: DON’T ASK ME TO FORGET

Ireland Baldwin came with receipts.

The daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger publicly accused Perez of humiliating her family for years and targeting her while she was still a child. She specifically brought up his treatment of her during the ugly public custody battle between her parents and his coverage of the infamous voicemail Alec Baldwin left Ireland when she was 11.

Ireland said Perez had sexualized her from a young age and called his past conduct toward her family unforgivable.

She still said she hoped he recovered.

But she wasn’t about to pretend his hospitalization suddenly erased what he did.

That’s an important distinction.

Compassion does not require amnesia.

Ireland can hope a man survives while also refusing to participate in the public-relations cleanup of his legacy.

JARED PADALECKI SENT LOVE. THEN THE INTERNET HANDED HIM THE FILE.

Supernatural star Jared Padalecki initially responded to Perez’s crisis with compassion.

Nothing strange about that.

Jared has publicly discussed his own struggles with depression and has spent years advocating for mental-health awareness.

Then his followers started telling him exactly who he was defending.

And baby…

That sympathy post disappeared.

Padalecki subsequently apologized, explaining that he didn’t know the extent of Perez Hilton’s history and did not condone his past behavior.

Even more embarrassing?

Perez had reportedly written nasty things involving Jared himself.

So Jared basically walked into the Perez Hilton archives, looked around and said:

Oh. Never mind.

He still maintained his belief in compassion and forgiveness, but he made it clear that extending humanity to someone in crisis did not amount to endorsing what Perez had done.

TJ JACKSON REMEMBERED WHAT PEREZ DID TO MICHAEL

Then there is TJ Jackson.

That one hits different.

Perez famously posted mocking speculation about Michael Jackson on the very day Jackson suffered the cardiac arrest that killed him in 2009. The post was quickly changed once the severity of Jackson’s condition became clear, but the internet remembered.

So did the Jackson family.

After Perez’s hospitalization, Michael Jackson’s nephew TJ Jackson publicly offered prayers for Perez’s health and healing while acknowledging that Perez had not been kind to his family.

That’s grace.

But it is also another receipt.

TJ did not need to pretend the history never happened in order to wish Perez well.

AND NOW PEREZ’S FAMILY IS ASKING PEOPLE TO STOP CALLING IT “KARMA”

Perez’s sister Barbara Lavandeira has openly pushed back against people describing his hospitalization as karma.

She says her brother genuinely tried to change, became a different man after becoming a father and had attempted to make amends with some celebrities he hurt.

Before this latest crisis, Perez himself said he had reached out to people including Britney Spears, Khloé Kardashian and Neil Patrick Harris in an effort to apologize or make peace.

Barbara says Perez is now recovering without normal access to social media or electronic devices and faces a long road ahead.

HSK doesn’t need to call what happened to Perez karma.

There is a better phrase.

DELAYED CONSEQUENCE.

Because consequence doesn’t always mean lightning strikes somebody five minutes after they do dirt.

Sometimes consequence is reputation.

Sometimes consequence is becoming 48 years old and discovering that apologies cannot force everybody you hurt to forgive you.

Sometimes consequence is watching an actor delete his sympathy after people explain your history to him.

Sometimes consequence is a woman you humiliated as a child becoming an adult with her own platform and finally getting to tell everybody what you did.

Sometimes consequence is the nephew of a dead icon having enough grace to pray for you while reminding the world exactly how you treated his family.

And sometimes consequence is realizing that the culture of public humiliation you helped normalize no longer belongs to you.

Everybody has the camera now.

Everybody has a platform.

Everybody has screenshots.

Everybody has archives.

Everybody can draw the pink circles.

The Gossip Queen helped build the monster.

Then the monster grew up.

Here is what Perez Hilton’s story should actually teach people.

Don’t confuse surviving long enough to apologize with escaping accountability.

Perez spent years making himself famous by being unnecessarily cruel to people who were often already bleeding publicly.

That history matters.

Ireland Baldwin has every right to remember it.

The Jackson family has every right to remember it.

Every celebrity Perez humiliated, mocked, outed, body-shamed or exploited has every right to decide that his eventual apology wasn’t enough.

Nobody gets to demand forgiveness because they finally developed a conscience.

But here is the other side.

A man’s psychiatric collapse is not entertainment.

His children did not create PerezHilton.com.

His mother didn’t draw those doodles.

And wishing that Perez survives long enough to confront the full weight of his own history is not the same thing as absolving him.

In fact, survival may require something harder.

Living with it.

Maybe that’s the real cautionary tale.

Perez Hilton spent years documenting everybody else’s worst moments like they would last forever.

Turns out his own archives lasted forever too.

The Gossip Queen has become the gossip.

Not because the universe suddenly discovered irony.

Because the people Perez wrote about grew up.

The internet kept the receipts.

And delayed consequence finally showed up at the door.
