The Universal Man…

Since 2009, Ice Cube has remained relentless in his efforts to force NWA’s legacy into Hollywood movie history.

It’s no secret that critical casting decisions have risen over the course of that time — but that’s not the only back and forth issue Cube apparently faced. Insider word reveals the same roadblocks applied to landing the writer best-fitted to bring NWA’s story to life.

“The film previously had scripts by Alan Wenkus, S. Leigh Savidge and Andrea Berloff.”

Just days ago, Cube took to Twitter to officiate “8/14/15” as the release date for “Straight Outta Compton” release date. This, after sources say the timeline of the project involved, “dealing with multiple writer changes and over five years of preparation.”

So who’s the writer that helped to seal the studio deal? His name is Jonathan Herman — who isn’t only reported to be “Universal’s go-to” he’s also noted as the scribe responsible for the “major script overhaul, which got the studio excited.”

“After more than five years, four writers and a tough-to-please trio that holds cast and script veto power, Universal’s N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” is finally getting the green light.”

Here’s what Ice Cube had to say:

“The script by Jonathan Herman is a dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, LAPD, rap feuds, FBI, PMRC, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records… all of it.”

  1. I’m going to see it. I’m anxious to see where they’ll end this film. Eazy’s Death? Death Row’s implosion? Dre’s big sale of ‘Beats’ to Apple? Whatever the case, I’m there.

    • They wont end it at Eazy’s death??!! Please no! Damn. I wonder how it will end!

      • @Just Joi–Possibly at them trying to make a comeback in the early ’00s, as indicated by the songs ‘Chin Check (From the ‘Next Friday’ Soundtrack)’ and ‘Hello’ from Ice Cube’s album at the time, ‘War and Peace,’ I think.

  2. OMG! I’m too excited over this!

    *Doing the carlton*

They had me at script veto power. Finally a REAL biopic. Hopefully, no one edits the hell out of it.

    Yay!!!

  3. This will be an interesting movie, I wasn’t a fan of NWA, persay, but I love all of them as individual artist…(R.i.p..EZ)

    • I love how far they’ve come as artists and as people. Too bad Eazy didnt make it. I wonder what his life would be like. If he would’ve developed his brand…

  4. Arabian Prince should be given due credit and much respect as the original member with a huge hand in the production/sound of NWA. He was the most handsome of all the guys!

  5. When I was younger, I also saw a tape of dre getting f*cked up on a plane, people spitting in his face. I was young among teenage uncles and aunts at the time, but can’t find the video now.

      • There was some sought of underground tape during the late 80s that showed dre traveling I think to the bet awards, while on the plane he was being violated by a group of guys.

        • If something like that happened today, they’d land the damn plane and throw the asshole who was spitting at him in ail. TRUE.

I was on a flight from LAX to JFK when Snoop was at his peak. He was flying a huge group of Crips to the MTV Awards to perform “Murder was the Case” and while he was in F/C with a few friends, the bulk of the group was in coach. Those dudes were so rowdy, and they were seriously mackin’ on the crew, the captain came out and told them that if they didn’t settle down he was landing the plane in Kansas City.
They did so he didn’t. It was pretty funny.

  6. I hope Dee Barnes sued his ass because what he did to her sounded like an attempted murder case. If Eazy and Ren said she deserved it then karma came quick for Eazy sorry to say.

      • No more like punching and kicking the girl while down. Broken bones and bruised face. Dee looked worst than poor ri ri after cb exploded. Cb has suffered but not dre.

  7. …Can someone explain why we need a biopic on one of the biggest groups of studio gangstas ever in the first place, especially when the truth about Eazy E (The only true ‘Gangster’ and wannabe Satanist, according to some) won’t be revealed?

      • But of course. I just don’t hold the group in the highest esteem for what they helped proliferate, but ehh.

    • I don’t know they might get to the real. Cubes involved, it might happen. Dre don’t give a f*ck what anyone thinks of him now.

      • dre been shot in the leg back then in the deathrow days.

and dre seen too many artists get beat down.

the devil was following nwa around like crazy all the violence, rape and degrading women they put out.

        niggaz4life was a dark album.

        • ^The title being backwards should’ve been a sign for us all. Hip-Hop is Masonic in origin (i.e. ‘The B-Boy stance,’ which is reminiscent of some Masonic stance), but NWA definitely brought the Satanism to the table.

        • I like that album as a instrumental. The lyrics were shit. It was just so over the top with the bitch hating.

    • REGARDLESS OF HOW REAL NWA WAS THEY HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON RAP MUSIC AND PIONEERE GANGSTER RAP AND LOOK AT ALL THE IMITATOPRS.

      • What do you think I was talking about when I said ‘what they helped proliferate?’ I give Cube and Ren props for their lyricism and Ghostwriting for the rest of the crew, but other than that? Pass.

        • Not even production. Man first time I heard express yourself, it was like hearing rap for the first time again.

    • eazy was just a local neighborhood dude selling crack nothing more.

just like the majority of future thug rappers all they did was sell drugs for a living trying to get by they wasn’t national terrorists or anything.

  8. EAZY DABBLED WITH SATANISM TRUE HE LOVED USING THAT Satanic voice on most of his sonhgs.

the rest of nwa was just as guilty.

doc backmasked some lyrics on the end of beautiful but deadly.

dre, ren, and cube all flrted with satan on their solo records.

rbx warned dre and snoop when they made murder was the case they wqas playing with satan they wanted rbx to voice the devil in the song rbx regused so daz did it instead.

    • Okay, according to someone who was backstage and apart of the entourage, Quik levitated at the KDay concert Easter weekend. I didnt think he had crossed over.

        • Considering the Industry he’s in is RUN by Masons, it’s safe to say O’Shea ain’t that bold. He would’ve been found in a ditch the day after he recorded that if that was his intention.

          • Have you heard the song, everything corrupt by cube. He released it on u tube only I think. If you haven’t have a look.

            • Controlled opposition. There’s no way Cube would’ve become as successful as he has without ‘being down with the get-down,’ especially in Hollyweird. I’ll check the song out, though.

            • I’m trying figure cube out myself. But you know he got married young, his kids love and respect him. I haven’t really seen a crack yet.

            • Remember he went straight to the bomb squad after leaving nwa. Chuck was in his ear with the advice.

            • Raheim watch the video for everything currupt to. It’s helps with his message in the song.

            • Chuck D is a Mason, too, but considering his music and activism, I would give him a pass before Cube. Truth be told, they all (Of all genres) have to join when they reach a certain point of success, so it’s no surprise.

              @Anonymous 12:15–Will do, thanks.

            • Hold up. Did you say chuck d a mason. Wtf. No really WATTHEFUCK. Your busting my bubble over here. Any kinda proof?

            • It was an inference and an extension of my earlier post about all entertainers having to join when they reach a certain level of success. And besides that, Freemasonry is African in origin, anyway, so if Chuck is a part of it, it’s not for malicious reasons.

            • yes that would explain why public enemy would do a song with anthrax a satanic rock group.

        • yes bomb squad and chuck d produced cube’s first album.

and what did griff do when he left public enemy he signed with luke the king of porn rap.

  9. on cubes predator album he’s rocking the skull.

on the straight outta Compton album cover you see 6 members forming a satanic circle with eazy pointing a gun another symbol of death.

      • yes the chili peppers was known Satanist.

and lets not forget the whole nwa click sampled parliament funkadelic and George Clinton was a known Satanist.

  10. “…Who got the balls to murder me/Degree higher than a 33”
    –Ice Cube, ‘Only in California’

A well-connected rapper is a longstanding rapper, boys and girls.

    • There was talk they received some, uh, ‘spiritual guidance’ in order to secure a record deal, though I don’t know how true that is. The subject matter and imagery of their early songs & videos (‘Crossroads,’ ‘Mr. Ouija,’ ‘Look Into My Eyes,’ etc.) is very telling, however…

      • crossroads the same thing Robert Johnson was into in his short life satan.

eazy was into satanic chit and trained bone well.

bone refers to skull and bones and the thugs refers to thugees and the servants of kali goddess of death.

        • Yeah, Robert Johnson is the proto-example of the ‘Selling your soul to the Devil at the Crossroads’ thing. If you look at the one picture of Johnson online where he’s sitting while holding a Guitar, he has a very haunted/strange look in his eyes. Speaking of which, how interesting is it that Puffy was trying to play him in a biopic back in the early ’00s?

  11. towards the end of approach to danger on nwa’s last album right before eazy’s verse you hear somebody whispering come back to hell and see me some time rigt after you hear the dramatics samples from get up get down.

  12. cube served the death agenda from day 1.

album cover kill at will he was holding a gun a death symbol.

death certificate he was pledging allegiance to satan over a corpse of uncle sam.

lethal injection you see somebody injwecting a needle in a girl another symbol of death.

all cubes groups promoted sex, death, and violence just like eazy’s groups on ruthless andf the deathrow artists.

  13. Now are they going to be truthful about how Eazy E died? Let’s not forget that the pitbull face Jerry Heller injected him with aids .

  14. No not yoyo. I know you think she a dyke. Put yoyo was a good role model. I remember seen her on the phil Donahue show with bwp, lyte. Oh how I loved yoyo.

    • Yoyo was fine back in the day (And who could forget ‘My name is KEY-LO-LO! You got it? K-E-Y…*Sheneneh & Bonquisha chime in* LO-LO! Don’t forget it, baldy!’ to Tommy on ‘Martin?’ LOL). She’s married to a mayor in Michigan now, though.

    • you heard her gangster records her and cube was doing the bonnie and clyde chit when jigga was taking notes.

yoyo mADE SONGS ABOUT SHOOTING DUDES AND GIRLS BACK ON HER EARLY ALBUMS.

AND SHE PLAYED HOODRAT ROLES IN BOYZ N THE HOOD AND MENACE TO SOCIETY.

  15. Ice Cube ripped off just as many artists as Puff Daddy has! If you think I’m lying ask Yo Yo! Second, I heard Cube got his ass kicked on Crenshaw and Slauson and someone stole his gold chain. Is that true?

    • when cube was beefing with kam and his dj watts up.

watts up wooped cube’s ass and took his westside connection chain and kam took it and showed kit around cypress hill who cube was also beefing with.

but cube and kam made up but has never worked together since.

  16. Common dissed the shit out of Ice Cube on the song “I See The Bitch In You” Cube never responded back. Gee I wonder why?

  17. Why didn’t Dre’s career end after beating Dee Barnes? He threw her down a flight of stairs then kicked her in the ribs and in back of the head. She must have gotten a good settlement.

    • because controversy sells records.

may sound sick now but lots of young dudes said dre earned cooloints for beating women.

he should have woope cube who dissed him on her show.

cold 187 dissed dre saying you scared as phukk to diss ice cube.

    • dre only disses folks who he know ain’t gonna woop his ass him and eazy was old buddies before the fame.

who’s scared of Jermaine dupri which was why dre dissed him and he needed Eminem, xzibit, and timbaland to do that.

dre wanna diss ja rule for acting like pac and pac had no love for dre why didn’t dre never say anything to pac before he died.

dre know who to phukk with.

      • choice called dre a fag and a bitch back in 90.

luke, above the law, tim dog called dre a fag.

when pedophile jd calls a fag its serious.

dj quik said dre and lonzo and Arabian prince would go to gay clubs back in the 80’s when dre was with the wrecking crew.

  18. It was January 27, 1991 at record release party in hollywood where he beat her up. He slammed her leg and the right side of her body against the wall near a stairway. She ran to the ladies room and Dre followed and punched her in back of the head.

  19. I.wonder if the guy portraying dre will.crossdress in this movie as well? Tell the whole truth & nuthin but the truth right????

    • HE WORE GLITTER, LIP GLOSS.

WELL LETS NOT FORGET IT WAS THE EARLY 80’S AND THE GROUP WAS COPYING THE TIME, FULL FORCE, PRINCE AND OTHER GROUPS WHO WORE JHERI CURLS AND LOOKED JUSAT AS FEMININE.

REMEMBER MICHAEL JACKSON AND OTHER POP STARS LOOKED JUST AS FEMININE AS DRE DID.

CHECK OUT SOME OF NEW EDITIONS OLD PICS, AND EDDIE MURPHY LOKED GAY AS HELL.

RICK JAMES WAS ON THE STREET SONGS COVER LOOKING LIKE A GAY ESCORT WITH THOSE HOOKER BOOTS RICK LOOKED LIKE HE WAS SELLING HIS ASS.

  20. This needs to be recast. Dawayne Jordan should play Eazy-E and Cairo Brewer should play Dr. Dre and if not Ice Cube son, Marquett Drayton should play Ice Cube. Petition it asap!
