Jet Magazine Folds Print Publication…

Jet Magazine Out of Business

Johnson Publishing announced that Jet Magazine, which was founded in 1951, will no longer be printed after June of this year. Reportedly, they will launch a transition to a digital magazine app by the end of that month.

Jet has the third-largest circulation in the African-American magazine market with 700,000, behind Ebony and Essence.

Here is what Linda Johnson Rice, the chairman of JPC said:

“Almost 63 years ago, my father, John Johnson, named the publication Jet because, as he said in the first issue, ‘In the world today, everything is moving faster. There is more news and far less time to read it. He could not have spoken more relevant words today. We are not saying goodbye to Jet, we are embracing the future as my father did in 1951 and taking it to the next level.”

The announcement of the shift comes on the heels of another big change at the company. JET’s former editor-in-chief Mitzi Miller was recently named editor-in-chief of EBONY Magazine, succeeding Amy DuBois Barnett who served in the role since 2010. Former JET senior editor Kyra Kyles has been named the digital editorial director to lead the magazine’s transition.

  1. Damn , now I will never get to be a “Beauty of The Week”! RIP , Jet . You will be missed.

    • I know that’s right!!! Damn!!! That was the best part to see Imma become a Jet Beauty of the Week! ***Ugggghhh****

    • u can still be the beauty of the week. instead of the book the stories will be on app. they say the app will cost the same as the subscription.

    • Hey look on the bright side; you can still get with four other half-naked broads and stick your ass out on the cover of XXL with 50 Cent and Method Man.

    • Lol. This is too sad. Very few black publications of substance exists. Some of my friends made JBOW. Glad I saved a ‘autographed’ copies to show my non existent grandchildren. You can always aim for Hype Hair and sign a copy for me when you’ve arrived 😉

      • Lol @ Hype Hair. I’ll take that over something super tawdry like Black Confessions.

        • Damn…Black Confessions is still around? I used to read that in High school and believed that all relationships were supposed to be “romantic”.

Speaking of back in the day, somebody that I grew up with was a Jet Beauty of the Week. She looked okay but back then I thought she was stuck up because she never said more than hi to everybody else. Turns out she had a plan to get out of the hood (’cause even back then, hoodrats will bring a person down). She went to USC on scholarship and went on to work in the IT field.

  2. Wow. All good things must come to and end. I’ll be honest, I only read it while standing in line at the grocery store.

    • I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. Jet hasn’t been hot since the 70’s and 80’s.

        • Yes! It was huge. And remember Right On? My aunts read those all the time when I was little.

  3. I remember I would always look for the Beauty of the Week! I couldn’t tell you what else was in that mag but the top albums and top singles in the back.

  4. That sucks I all ways wanted to be beauty of the week that is one dream that will not be coming true I remember trying to lose weight and exercise just to be in jet well good by jet magazine.

  5. I had a former classmate who was beauty of the week but they jacked up her photo. When I told her I saw her in the magazine she looked frustrated. Poor thang.

  6. Lol…I’m pretty sure they ate talking about showgirls and singers. Josephine Baker started a trend for black female performers to gain more acceptability in europe that lasted from the 20s and 30s through the late fifties

  7. Was a staple in our home and at the barbershops. It became more fluff than actual good articles about black life. Last one I read was only 25 pages long.

  8. Who still subscribes to Jet Magazine?! *slowly raises hand* lolololol! I signed up for a monthly publication package and chose Jet. One memory I have is an aunt who sold a Jet w/Muhammad Ali on its cover for $460. I’m assuming it was a collectors edition…

  9. R.I.P. JET MAGAZINE through this magazine in the last thirty years I have seen and read about many successful Black People doing positive things, but Jet Magazine like Ebony Magazine is no longer owned by the Johnson Family, white corporations own them now and that is why this magazine is going digital, I hope we will still get a Beauty of The Week Photos though

  10. No more Jet Beauty? That is the only reason as to why I would pick up a copy of Jet!

    • Yawn. So is 98% of everything in the US.

Men own women’s care and beauty aids companies
      Asians own Taco Bell franchises
white man started Popeyes fried chicken

Since when do the owners supposed to match the product?

      Next.

      • Yeah, I heard the Dr Behind Dr Miracles is actually middle eastern. Funny a lot of middle eastern and Indian women use relaxers
